You Enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, Now What?

The Holidays are here, and you've signed up for a Medicare Advantage Plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15th - December 7th), but what do you do now?

Depending on when you enrolled, you should have received your new insurance cards and/or benefits package from the carrier you were enrolled with. If you have not by now, you should call the agent who enrolled you with the new Medicare Advantage Plan. After the first of the year, your new Medicare Advantage Plan will begin.

Next, you must inform your doctors of the change in your insurance. You can do this by calling each of them or waiting until your next appointment. However, it would be best to go ahead and make the calls. Call and update your information for a smooth transition if you receive your medications via mail-order pharmacy.

Get to know the Extra Benefits your plan has to offer. The summary in the Benefits Book is the best place to find this information. If your Medicare agent did not leave one behind for you, and you did not receive one in the mail with your new cards, you may want to call and arrange to get a copy of the plan book.

If your plan offers an over-the-counter or grocery allowance, make sure you take advantage of it. You should have received a specified amount and a catalog from which to order. Depending on your plan, you can shop directly at a specific store, but most offer online ordering or call-in for delivery or pickup.

Over the years, our experience has been that people opt out of their Medicare Advantage Plan because they do not understand how it works, which becomes overwhelming. Or they enrolled in a plan that does not fit their needs. Most commonly, this occurs from over-the-phone enrollments. If you had a Medicare agent enroll you, you should be able to call them directly to ensure the plan you were enrolled in is correct and that your concerns are met.

If you do not feel confident in your decision or do not understand how your plan works, you can get the help you need to stay in the plan or make a change. It is always best to work directly with a Medicare agent, especially one you can reach when needed. There are Special Enrollment Periods and rules for making any changes to your Medicare plans, and that is the real benefit of having someone you can talk to.

At Senior Solutions, the Medicare division of Bedrock Financial Group, we train our agents to be advisors and ensure you are happy with the new plan and confident in your decision to make the change.
